The internet is crazy

The world is weird. The internet is crazy. Earlier this month, I joined Twitter as I thought it would be all fun and jokes. Whew chile, was I wrong. This morning I had to delete the app from my phones as the negativity and level of toxicity are beyond what I can manage.  Not to say that this app isn’t insightful but people are so full of opinions and everybody thinks they are right; there are people with opinions fighting others with opinions. Nobody has the right to do anything they want, as far as I can see, if you do, people hate. If you don’t people hate. Either case it’s not a win for any party.  Twitter was founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams. It was created with the hopes that people could share posts and interact with others ...

Murder not Police Brutality

Murder not police brutality! Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, the ENTIRE internet has been bombarded by the recent murder of George Floyd. In the video, you can hear Floyd saying weakly, “I can’t breathe”, “They gon’ kill me” while the police officer, Derek Chauvin rested his knee and the full force of his body weight on Floyd’s neck. I was purposely putting off writing this article because I didn’t want to watch the video; I didn’t want to see what was going on in this world. But in efforts to stand against the crime and violence against black people, it is vital that I put my feelings aside and muster up the courage to show my support for #blacklivesmatter. I am a BLACK woman; I am a Jamaican woman. I am a black woman in business carrying a lot of baggage with me. Growing ...

Business Affirmations

About two years ago, a self-proprietorship by the name of D’orandae was formed and launched itself on social media platforms. This business was created by a black woman at the age of 20 years old because of her love for writing as a form of expressing herself. A friend of hers encouraged her numerous times to be braver in showcasing her talent and it turned out she was able to gain more than 2000 followers on Instagram, numerous articles in the Western Mirror, and the launch of its website. The brand now motivates women to showcase themselves despite what others may think and built a virtual community for women to discuss what or who is stopping them from achieving their goals. The motivation behind D’orandae came from seeing and starting to believe in affir...

What to do if Covid-19 took your job

I’ve not been on this earth long enough to compare the severity of world events but based on the views of others; this truly is the worst the world’s economy has been in. Covid-19 has ruined lives by stealing joy, money, and lives; many personal and business lives have been severely impacted not just in Jamaica but across the globe. On the other hand, Covid 19 has showed us what should be important in our lives; realizing that the things that truly matter we have been taking for granted just for the sake of earning a buck to spend it on bills. The question that many are asking now is “What should I do now that Covid-19 took my job?” Thankfully, I have a few suggestions below: Enjoy the moments with your family - Many despise the Kardashian family for reasons that are unknown to me. Y...

Work from home jobs – September 2019 edition

As the world continues to follow up with the technological changes of the environment, work from home jobs have increased dramatically since the 21st century. The Most Important Things I Learned About Myself, I Learned Through Freelancing

I never expected to become a freelance writer. Yet, 14 years, an MSc, two kids, and a failed marriage later, here I am. I have built a successful freelance writing business that has allowed me to have the freedom to structure my work schedule the way I want, work from where I want, and be there for my kids as they grew up. I was home for them before and after school. I went on all their field trips. I volunteered at their school all the time. Now, they’re in high school, my oldest set to graduate this year, and I am turning my focus more and more on myself and what I want the second half of my life to be. I don’t like the term “midlife crisis.” That makes this time in life sound horrifying, a time when I have so much to look forward to and so many ambitions. But first, let’s go b...

Failure is apart of success

Oh, lort! Isn't it Saturday yet?  Wait… What am I saying? I need to quit thinking like this and think of it this way, it’s a new day to try something new. Sounds better, right? There I was scrolling through Instagram, minding my own business and bucked up on a post that said: “When a child is learning to walk and falls 50 times, they never think to themselves, “Maybe this isn’t for me.” I thought about it for the longest while and decided the best thing for me to do is write about it. I have been learning about myself over the past two years and I was finally able to announce to my mother what I want to be at the age of 21. Can you believe that? On a side note, I was unable to answer that question all my life. I have been dabbling in things that made me money...
