How do you balance being a small business owner, entrepreneur and working a 9-5?
Let’s face it, there are easier things to do in life than starting and maintaining a business. Some may ask why bother if it is that hard.
Another question popularly asked is why not quit your day job and focus full-time on building and maintaining your business.
The truth is:
Entrepreneurship costs money
On average, start-ups costs $3000 USD (give or take) to get the business off the ground, with owners paying for:
- Website costs between $750 & $1500
- Business Cards costs between $10 & $50
- Marketing & Design $250-$300
- Stock & Inventory $1000
Do you have that amount of money lying down somewhere? You see, if you are unable to pull that amount of money from your hat, you can understand why it is important that you learn to balance having a 9-5 and running your business.
How can we do so?
Let’s consider a few ways in which we can balance our careers with our business ventures:
Planning & Scheduling
Softwares such as Planoly & Hootsuite has made life so much easier for people like us. Since social media is an integral part of business today, these apps allow you to schedule content at a date and time of your choice to be shown on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest.
There will be days when you don’t have anything to post due to a lack of creativity or drive. On those days, try and share customer reviews or share your follower’s positive opinions about your business. New customers love to see what current customers have to say about your business, they love to see that people are purchasing value from you, so why not show them that?
Quit Wasting Time
Did you just spend an hour scrolling through social media during your lunchtime? How about hosting a brunch with some of your customers or schedule a collaboration meeting with someone in your niche? Stop wasting valuable time on things that contribute nothing to your business or personal health.
Always, always, always remember to relax. This could mean booking into your favorite hotel for the weekend or simply reading your favorite book one night while sipping on your favorite glass of wine. Whichever you prefer, remember to do something that allows you to unwind and relax your mind and body. This way too, creativity may enter as stress leaves your mind.
Despite what social media says about not getting enough sleep, your body does require you to get between 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Do not make it a habit to not get enough sleep, telling yourself that you are putting that energy into your business. You could be doing more harm than good.
Planning & Scheduling our content, sharing reviews, relaxing, taking a nap and simply not wasting time are five ways we can consider when balancing our 9-5 with our business.
